DG4G – Maximum Growth – Data Governance for Growth

DG4G – Maximum Growth

“The number one data governance & growth newsletter in Australia.”

Making you think a little differently about data governance and growth.

Here is a question, a growth tidbit and a data governance nugget to get your mental juices flowing . . .

Question

Here is a question for you to reflect on:

“How much stress is the right amount for your growth?”

Growth Tidbit

The Yerkes-Dobson law proposes that a little bit of stress can help to increase your or your team’s performance.  However, it has also been demonstrated that performance declines under a load of increased stress.   The challenge is in discovering where this line, between maximum and diminished productivity, lies.  As our resilience increases (see previous newsletter on Resilience) our ability to be productive while under greater levels of stress increases as well.   While it doesn’t sound too appealing to be under greater levels of stress, what it is meant to imply is that former levels of stress that we felt, we no longer have as strong a negative response to – the stress is no longer depleting us in the same way.

Dr. John Demartini has a great quote that touches on this balance between productive and unproductive stress levels.  He says “Maximum growth occurs at the border of support and challenge”.

So what stresses you out?  Where do you draw on support to balance out the challenges you face?

Data Governance Nugget

Stress plays a significant role in most of our working lives.  We see this most in organisations’ data governance structures.  We’ve talked about one of the reasons why your data governance isn’t working is the “Two Hats” problem (see Why Data Governance Doesn’t Work).  In this scenario, we have people who were hired as marketing managers, now taking on the additional role of Data Steward or Data Owner.  We have found the work overload in the Data Stewards ‘day job’, leaves them without much energy or motivation to prioritise the data governance maintenance work that needs to be done.  We have found that ‘maximum growth’, from a data governance perspective, can occur when the Data Governance for Growth team are providing the support required by Data Owners, Stewards and Custodians.  This could help turbo charge your data governance team too!
